Naming your new items- Does it really matter?

Up to this point I have always named my new items and creations based on the fabric name. For example, Joel Dewberry's Ginseng designer line is named with either the word Ginseng or Orchid somewhere in the title. Makes sense right? Well here is the thing that has really got me thinking just to go out on a limb and name it whatever pops into my mind after I make it... Etsy shop stockers!!!

Yes, I think they are out there!

Waiting and watching my shop for my latest fabrics and designs. Paranoid alittle? YES!! And here is why , there are about 4 shops out there in Etsyland that seem to get the exact same fabrics and make a zipper pouch within a few short days after I get the NEW item made and in my shop. Now of course I am a realist and know that there are fabrics that are so popular that this is just bound to happen... that is acceptable. But I go above and way beyond the call to find hard to find fabrics yet it seems to keep happening. So is it in the name? Could it be giving to many clues as to the designer?

So the experiment will soon begin and then I will see the outcome! Maybe it is all just one big coincidence-- that just keeps happening :(

Waiting to see how your experiment pans out. I would more than likely suspect that it is one of them mysterious anonymous shop 'favoriters' out there that keep their identities anonymous for the purpose of keeping tabs on your stock! There isn't a whole lot you can do about it if that is the case. There are so many different things one can do and so many variations on a theme I just don't see why anyone would bother with straight out copying others. Sounds like too much work to me. I hope the best for you!

Hello
I've been reading your blog for a while. I too like to make pouches and bags and hoping to set up my own etsy shop in the near future (but I'm not the copycat you are talking about--:)) and I was thinking about the same thing just today--I wondered how I would name my products. I thought about naming my bags by my girlfriends' names that I think the certain bag would suit (i.e. Ashley tote)...of course I am not at all implying the certain girlfriend should buy the certain bag :) I also thought about the place I would like to take the bag to (i.e. Coastal tote, Kyoto bag) Is that weired? ANyways, I think your bags/pouches are fabulous! Good Luck!

kiko, I think naming after your friends or where you would like to go with your bags is a great idea :)
